You're trying to eat well. You pick the foods that look healthy. Yet you still feel tired and heavy after meals. The problem might be that some of those "healthy" foods aren't as good as their packaging suggests.
Here are some common ones that quietly work against you.
Plain yoghurt is genuinely great. But many fruit-flavoured ones are packed with as much sugar as dessert. That sugar gives you a quick lift, then drops you into an afternoon slump.
Better: Buy plain yoghurt and add your own fruit.
A smoothie sounds healthy, but many shop versions are basically sugar in a cup, with very little to keep you full. You feel great for an hour, then crash.
Better: Make your own, and add something filling like oats or nut butter.
Even the ones covered in words like "natural" and "wholegrain" are often loaded with sugar. They're designed to taste good, not to keep you going.
"If a food needs a lot of health words on the box, that's often a sign it isn't very healthy."
Many light or low-fat snacks remove the fat but add sugar or salt to keep the taste. And white bread turns to sugar in your body fast, leaving you hungry again soon after.
Better: Choose wholegrain versions and snacks with protein or fibre.
Whole fruit is wonderful — it comes with fibre that slows down the sugar. Juice removes the fibre and leaves mostly sugar. One glass can hold the sugar of several pieces of fruit.
Better: Eat the whole fruit and drink water.
They promise a boost, but the boost is usually just sugar and caffeine. The crash that follows leaves you more tired than before.
The closer a food is to how it grows in nature, the better it usually is for your energy. Real fruit over juice. Plain over flavoured. Whole over "light."
You don't need a perfect diet. Just swap one or two of these this week and notice how much steadier your energy feels by the afternoon.
